PopUps: Penélope Cruz to Play Donatella Versace in 'American Crime Story'
After rumors that Lady Gaga would play Donatella Versace for the third season of "American Crime Story" were shot down, Ryan Murphy has cast finally cast the role: Penélope Cruz will play the Italian designer in the upcoming FX anthology series, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Slated for a 2018 release, "Versace: American Crime Story," will be about the murder of Donatella Versace's brother, Gianni Versace.
The Oscar-winning Cruz is the latest cast announcement for the season, which is based on the book "Vulgar Favors" by Maureen Orth. it was revealed earlier this year Edgar Ramirez will play Gianni Versace and Darren Criss will play serial killer Andrew Cunanan.
"Versace: ACS" will come after another season of the show, which will follow the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
In January, Murphy, who created "ACS," said Lady Gaga wouldn't playing Donatella Versace after rumors surfaced that she would return to the Murphyverse (she appeared in two seasons of "American Crime Story").
"She's a friend. But she's very busy this next year -- she's doing Super Bowl and then she's doing 'A Star Is Born' and I believe that she's going on tour," he said. "And when you're going to do a show like 'Versace,' it's a five-month commitment, it's a very big show, we're shooting it all over the world.
"So I just don't think with her schedule, I knew that it would never had worked. But I would love to work with her on something in the future," Murphy added.
